FON is a promising company that just made news by giving away 10,000 free wireless routers. The have an innovate approach towards low cost WiFi by having everyone share they WiFi with each other. They have a very pragmatic approach to saving T-Mobile/Starbuck WiFi users money and making money for anyone that lives near a Starbucks as well.
How does it work?
Well if you live near a Starbucks and are within WiFi range you can now share your Internet access and get paid doing so. T-Mobile charges $10 a day for unlimited access but with your FON router customers would only have to pay $2 using your WiFi. $1 goes to FON and the other dollar goes to you. Not bad, if you live near a high traffic Starbuck you would make quite a bit of money considering you wouldn't be doing anything, everything is turn key (software, billing, hardware).
This is where you can get creative even if you don't live near a Starbucks. Go to the store next door or the apartment upstairs or anyone that lives close by Starbucks to let these people know. You'll be doing them a favor and all the paying T-Mobile WiFi users a favor as well. I for one would probably not pay $10 to surf the web at Starbucks unless I really need to use the Internet but $2 is less than a specialty coffee over there and wouldn't mind paying especially if I know half of that is going to someone in the area not some large corporate company.
