I currently reside in Honolulu, Hawaii. I love it here is is a beautiful place to live.  Let me tell you though it is also a very expensive place to live, in fact it usually ranks nationally as one of the most expensive places to live in the US along with San Francisco and New York City. I wanted to see how Honolulu compares to other cities in the US and found a couple of really cool web sites that allow you compare the cost of living between two cities. If you have a flexible job or if you are just starting out your career you might want to take a look at this web site.

Lanikai Beach Hawaii
Lanikai Beach in Kailua on the Island of Oahu.  It’s about 15 minutes from where I live.

Here are a couple of comparisons that I made using the cost of living calculator.

A person making $60,000 in Honolulu, Hawaii would need to make ….

$30,857 in Boise City, Idaho – Boise City is booming city.  The cost of living is almost half of where I live.  Would I live there?  Probably not, it’s cheap but your still living living in Boise (Sorry if I offended anyone in Idaho), you just can’t compare Honolulu to Boise.  In fact right now it is about at night it is about 73 degrees.

$37,714 in Denver, Colorado – I once lived in Colorado for a few years, beautiful and pristine place and still affordable.  One thing about Colorado I don’t miss is the winters.  In Hawaii I don’t really watch the weather report because really it is pretty much always sunny but when I was living in Colorado the weather changed so quickly I needed to know the weather report so I knew what to wear.

$70,629 in San Francisco, California – Wow, I thought I had it bad here in Hawaii. I can see why many people live there though, San Francisco a great city.

$60,676 in New York, New York – I couldn’t leave out the Big Apple. Looks like it about even, NYC is a great place to visit but coming from Hawaii it is very fast paced for me.

$40,457 in Las Vegas, Nevada – I bet just a few years ago Las Vegas would have been cheaper but that city is booming and with that goes higher real estate prices.

You should try this neat little cost of living calculators out. Who knows, it might even spur you to make a move or not move.  By the way I just read that Texas does not have any State Taxes, although they do have an 8.25% sales tax.  Sales tax here in Honolulu only 4.5% and yes we do have State taxes.

So do any of you have cities you recommend?  I would love to hear what you have to say about your own cities.
