How many times have you been out shopping, saw a product you liked, and wondered if you could find it cheaper somewhere else? It happens to all of us – and the tech industry knows it.

So it’s not surprising that one of the hottest new cell phone applications is one that makes comparison shopping a breeze. It’s called ShopSavvy. Here’s how it works:

When you’re out shopping, start up the ShopSavvy application on your phone.
The application activates your phone’s camera to read barcodes.
Take a picture of the barcode of the product you want to compare.
ShopSavvy automatically searches online stores and nearby bricks-and-mortar stores.
You pick the best deal. If it’s physically nearby, ShopSavvy uses GPS to direct you to the store’s location.

Additional features include: Reviews, price alerts, wish lists, browsing history, and the ability to forward links to friends.

This is a fantastic idea for anyone who wants to save money easily and doesn’t do all their shopping online, like me. Much as I love online shopping, sometimes it’s just more fun to head out to bricks-and-mortar shops, and you get the satisfaction of having the product in your hands right away instead of waiting for shipping.

What I like about ShopSavvy is the ease and speed of use. No endless button-pushing and navigating. Just quick and easy. On the downside, you can’t search by product name, only by barcode – and as of now, the ShopSavvy database is not 100% complete, so certain products might not show up in your search. Also, the application does not list or suggest similar products. That would be a nice feature to have – sometimes I see an interesting product but I think to myself, "hmmm…maybe another brand would be better or cheaper, or have more of the features I want."

Finally, the bad news…this cool new application is so far only available on one phone – the T-Mobile G1 (Google phone). http://www.t-mobileg1.com The G1 phone uses a Google-developed operating system called Android. ShopSavvy is built to use the Android operating system, and in fact it won Google’s Android Developer Challenge contest last fall. The ShopSavvy application was developed by a Dallas-based company called Big in Japan which, despite the name, is a U.S. company. I’d like to see the company adapt ShopSavvy as an application for other phones, too.

Cons

Although it is being touted as being as easy to read as reading paper, it is still another computer screen causing your eyes to get bleary after an extended amount of time.
Most people still enjoy the feel of a paper book between their fingers. This electronic device replaces the traditional book for what essentially amounts to a mini-computer.
Although there are a large number of books available for Kindle, you still can’t just get any title you want just yet.
The battery life is fairly long, however, you do still have a somewhat limited time to use the device because at some point, it’s inevitable, the battery will die.

Of course, the only way to know whether a new product is right for you is to try it yourself. You may find that some of the pros and cons work differently for you.

MarkDownMom.com is a "deal site" that provides the latest information on discounted products and services. The site is geared towards mothers trying to say on a budget. The site also features the profiles of unknown shopping spots that offer quality service and cheap prices. It even features budget wise recipes, online coupons and printable coupons. Some of the deals and tips that I found on the site was a $1 coupon off Nestle’s Juicy Juice (Kids love that stuff) and tips on how to save money at consignment stores.

What I like about MarkDownMom.com

My favorite thing about MarkDownMom.com is that they offer unique content by highlighting restaurants and shops that offer great value. I love when bloggers or websites provides this insider information. Another one of my favorite things about the site is that it has budget recipes. I just read a post on some finger lickin ribs that made my mouth water. I might have to try that recipes. MDM also provide the latest discounts and coupons many mothers could use. These includes brick and mortars stores as well as online stores like Macy’s, Fashion Bug, Marshalls and Wal-Mart.

What I didn’t like about MarkDownMom.com

I was not too impressed with the layout of the site. I think it can be improved quite a bit. For example the site has more than 25 tags or categories which are not in alphabetical order. I can’t imagine someone finding what they are looking for easily using that layout. This is not really a big issues though and can easily be improved.

Overall the site does show a lot of promise, because caters towards budget minded moms is a very large niche. Again, I love the posts on unique restaurants and shops. Any mothers out there might want to check this blog out.

WhoGets.com is a continuous online sweepstakes website with a twist. Instead of them picking who gets to win, you actually get to decide. Sounds funny but it is true, you could call this "online sweepstakes 2.0". WhoGets.com describes themselves at fun, new and cool with no catch for members (Free and No Spam).

How does it work?

WhoGets.com constantly puts giveaways on it site like books, mp3 players, video games and electronics. To be able to win you must register then submit an entry for each prize. Once you enter you may be one of seven randomly selected to be in the semi-final pool where the seven selected finalist will be required to tell why they should win. Other members will then vote for who they think should win the prize based upon those answers.

I noticed that many people that make it to the finals put in some interesting reasons why they should win. Many people use the pity technique stating that they have no money or that it is for a relative who really wants the product. It almost turns in to a begging contest.

How the heck do they make money?

WhoGets.com makes money because many of the prizes are sponsored by online retailers. They are also able to get a lot of site traffic because of their giveaways. From this traffic they can make money through site advertising.

Overall

WhoGets.com puts an interesting spin on sweepstakes contests. Since the site is new you might have a good chance of actually winning a prize. While this site is different, your odds of actually wining a prize does not really change. You still have to be randomly selected to win a prize. Call me lazy but having to submit why you want to win a prize just adds one more thing you must do to win the prize. Still if you like online sweepstakes site you can add this one to your list.

Is there such thing as Secret Amazon Deals? Well, the site SecretAmazonDeals.com tries to find the latest deals from Amazon.com that most people don’t know about. It is a fairly new shopping blog that was started March of this year but seems to be growing in traffic.

What I like

SecretAmazonDeals.com does a good job in finding deep discount items at Amazon. You could end up buying a lot of things even if you don’t need it because because some items are so cheap. Many of their deals feature discounts of up to 80%. Plus the great thing about Amazon.com is it offers free shipping on many items.

AmazonSecretDeals.com also has a newsletter that they mail out weekly that features the weeks best deals at Amazon. This makes it easy for anyone that doesn’t want to miss a good deal at Amazon.

What I don’t like

I think this site could probably do a better job designing the website to be more aesthetically pleasing. The Amazon deals that they find are good but not as diverse as I would like. When I search for deals on Amazon.com I usually just go to the Amazon.com Deals or Top Sellers page. Also, many times when things are discounted there usually is a reason.

Overall

This site fills the niche for anyone that really enjoys finding a bargain at Amazon. Since it is a fairly new site I expect it to improve the content as well as the site design. If you enjoy finding deep discount deals and love Amazon.com you should check it out.

I get a lot of the deals and freebies I post from many of my favorite deal forums. Surfing through all those forums does take quite a bit of time though, especially when you’re trying to weed out the crap from the good stuff. One website that helps you efficiently find great deals from forums is Dealighted.com. In fact you could call them the monster mash of all the popular deal forums.

What the heck does Dealighted.com do?

Dealighted.com aggregates most of of the popular deal forums and allows you to view the most popular forum threads. I’m not exactly sure how many forums it aggregates but I believe it sorts through around 650 posts and gathers the most popular (around 125) daily.

Dealighted Saves You Time and Money

I really like what Dealighted has done by allowing you to sort though just the most popular forum treads in one place. No more jumping from one forum to another. When popular deals are identified they are quickly put on the homepage. The site is aggregated using a "spider" or software so it is very efficient in finding many deals. Software aggregating has its advantages and disadvantages, while software can find the most deals very quickly, human sorting can usually find more relevant and quality deals. Still, if your looking for a good mix of quality and quantity deal threads Dealighted.com does this well.

Search For Lowest Product Prices

Dealighted also has a search engine that helps you find some of the lowest prices on particular products. I just did a search for "ipod" and got huge list of stores and price comparisons. You can also search through all the deal forum treads which is extremely useful if you want to find even more deals. I really like being able to search through all of the different forum threads, this will be a time saver for me.

A Mash Hit

Overall I like Dealighted.com’s unique concept of mashing up most of my favorite deal forums. Again, this is can be a time saving site especially for forum addicts. I’m sure they will be adding more features and even more forums to their repertoire in the near future.

Pzizz is a napping software that helps you increase your energy and performance with a simple 20 minute nap. I have been using Pzizz it for the last week and it has been quite effective. Before using this software I have been using a simple kitchen timer or my watch to wake me up from my naps. The problem I have when using those devices is that is I wake up abruptly or feeling drowsy. Sometimes I go back to sleep because I feel so drowsy which kind of defeats the purpose of a power nap.

Pzizz

Using the Pzizz software I just load a bunch of nap selections on to my MP3 player. Then when I’m ready for my power nap I just hit play and put on my headphones. So far I have been waking up feeling refreshed and have not overslept. I don’t even have to set an alarm, it wakes be up very peacefully unlike my kitchen timer or watch. The default time for the Pzizz power nap is 20 minutes but you can set it to shorter or longer to meet your needs. I find a 25 minute nap work great for me.

How the heck does it work?

Pzizz is unlike any other napping software or music because it uses a complex random selection which is not possible with CDs or other static audio devices. Every time you create a new pzizz nap selection you will be listening to something different so you will not hear the same thing twice. This random selection causes the subconscious to stay active because it does not get used to the track like CDs or tapes. By staying active you able to match you different brain wave patterns to the track more effectively, which give you a very efficient and restful nap.

Power Up with a Power Napping

If you always wanted to take a power nap and have had difficulty oversleeping or just falling asleep this is the product for you. Pzizz offers software for Window and Mac. They even have a hardware based device so you don’t even need a computer to use it. I think college students would love this program since most of them are sleep deprived especially around mid-terms or finals. Also anybody that want to try out polyphasic sleep could benefit using this.

Many people can’t take a mid day nap because of their work schedule but this can still be used on the weekends or when you travel. When you travel you are usually short on time and energy so taking a power nap would give you that extra boost to get you through the day.

Don’t have time to nap?

If you feel like you don’t have time to nap because of work you could still take a nap at your desk. Although this is not ideal, you can take a nap on you desk by just resting your head on you arms. Just use headphones instead of speakers to block out any outside noise. It will take some time to get used to and is better suited for shorter naps. I have done this before in my home office but recommend lying down if you can. I have even read of some people that simple go back to their car during lunch break and take a nap in their reclined car seat.

What is more energy, improved focus and less stress worth to you? For me this product has great value and is a keeper. Pzizz is non-addictive so if you have difficulty sleeping I would try this out before you using any sleep drugs.

I have had my ING Direct Online Savings account for about 6 months now and have been very impressed. I have been telling many friends and family about it because it is basically 4.5% interest with no minimums and it only took me about 5 minutes to sign up. It beats the crap out of any of my local low interest or no interest checking accounts.

Things I Like About ING Direct Online Savings

First of all ING consistently offers the best or one of the best rates out there period. There is no comparison to any of my local banks interest rates. There rate is 4.5% right now but is always pushing forward to becoming the highest or one of the highest interest rates in the country.

There are no minimums which is pretty much unheard of. That allows just about anyone to open up an account. There is also no need to change banks with this online savings account, it is suppose to be supplementary to your banking. You keep all the bank account you have.

You also get 24/7 online access to your account and it takes about 5 minutes to open an account. No more going down to the bank physically to open up an account. Who wants to do that anyway (Sorry I’m a lazy guy). I have not looked it up yet, but Orange ING Mortgage also offers discounted mortgages and one of the best CD rates, check it out if your in the market for those services.

How Online Savings Works

An ING Savings account is suppose to be a supplementary bank account. You don’t want to close any of your regular accounts. You might be wondering how do I deposit and access my money? Well, it really is simple you do it by transferring your money online from your other bank accounts back and forth.

I thought I would have to mail a check but that is not necessary. All you have to do is deposit a check like you would normally do at your local bank then once it clears you just log into your ING savings account and transfer any amount that you would like to deposit in your ING Savings account. When you want to deposit money from your ING savings to your local checking you would simply log into your ING savings account and transfer how much you want to your checking.

It does take a day or two for the transfer to complete but it really is very simple.

Check it out, there really is no risk for you even if you only put in a couple of bucks. While I don’t recommend having too much money in savings, having enought for a rainy day is smart and so it leaving it that money safely in a high interest account.
